Chisels is not typical or like regular other sites. It is extremely rare in being a hilltop occupied Anglo-Romano villa settlement. (Ham Hill nr Yeovil in Somerset being the only other one I know of in this part of the UK).
Why?
Answer = the British climate. Meaning, all known regular villas are sited on Southern or South Eastern slopes to spare them cold winds from the North, allow for good drainage and ensure that their specially British designed vilaas included courtyards or walled corridors to exploit what sun this part of the world offered.
NOTE. Remembering what I’ve said previous about finding a big lumpy coin of Hadrian, a first century Emperor, I found that coin at the lower most Western corner of Chisels where the whole of the ocean can be spied, suggesting, (something I’d always appreciated or assumed), that Chisels started off as a hilltop fort or military occupied settlement in those early days of Roman occupation. (Roman soldiers being established at Chisels as the campaign established and later expanded).
