As a child in Yeovil, from the back of my parent’s red Ford Anglia, I can remember us driving down what was then a one way Bond Street and turning left and then right to slowly peek the car bonnet out into Middle street, (today, a pedestrian precinct), and I recall peering out my open left window and hearing teenage girls with long hair and flowery knee length dresses walking up Middle Street with teenage boys in embroidered waistcoats and blue jeans, either ringing bells or singing songs or chanting.
The music of the time included “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)” by Scott McKenzie, and, yes, that particular song and artists like Donovan, The Small Faces did ring in a different culture – even in a town like Yeovil!
