“Internationally acclaimed inventor”

Whether online or off, the moment folk find out that I’m an internationally acclaimed inventor, I always hear the same thing.

“So what did you invent?”

And on hearing that seemingly innocent and anticipated question, my heart usually sinks, (I’ll explain why as this story unfolds), and a kind of post traumatic anxiety washes over me as the question sets off a vast line of painful emotive dominoes tumbling down across my psyche the same way you might feel if someone ever asked you; “So what was it like when you had that miscarriage?” OR “So what was it like when you got diagnosed with that debilitating terminal illness?” though, obviously, the person asking the question, possibly filled with a certain intrigue and desire to show some genuine interest in my life, has no idea that they’ve just poked a stick into a huge wasp’s nest of emotions that, even today, can still bring me to my knees.

But sometimes, just occasionally, I feel comfy enough to share the extra-ordinary events that the telling of the story demands.

And, honestly? It is for that reason this website really needs to exists because it is only by telling the whole story, in a, hopefully, well defined and structured way, that I can justify and validate the complete narrative and context of who I am and what I am as a human being.

And sure, while I’ve been preparing for the telling of my story for over 30 years, having accumulated a huge journal of text, anecdotes, media and other resources for that purpose, my prostate cancer diagnosis has meant that, instead of pursuing the project in retirement as I had intended to, there is a certain urgency in beginning that process now for fear that there may not be enough time to do so otherwise.

Hence … Here I am in the middle of October 2022, decanting all I have to say on the subject, as time ticks, ticks, ticks away unceasingly as the sands of my personal hour glass shifts from life to death.

But hey! Maybe that is a good thing because … well … we creative types always need a certain stimulus to engage and inspire us to focus on our work so what better stimulation could there ever be than to meet a certain deadline and objective before life itself is stolen from us?

So there …

It turns out that my own particular negative health based diagnosis is actually delivering me the positive force and energy I need to get this project underway and, hopefully, completed on time.

Thank you for indulging me by allowing me to explain the above so laboriously.

But the great news?

I have a tale to tale that really is worth the telling.

Now please continue by reading The Greedy Monkey Story where I will explain the reason why I created An entirely new engineering principle and a new technology, (my internationally award winning patented technology), that was inspired by an ancient fable and concept that has existed and remained hidden in plain sight for over 2000 years.

A fable I have used as inspiration to create a fixing, fastening and anchoring technology I describe as being “As simple as Cat’s Eyes but as universal as Velcro!”

A system suitable to inspire existing and brand new applications for both terrestrial and off world use and adoption.

About the Author

26 years ago, in my early 40s, I unwittingly imploded my 20 year love story of a marriage by allowing an extra-ordinary run of local, national and international business success in innovation and design entirely derail my private life.

Meaning, in doing what society expects of us, by striving and succeeding in being brave, risk averse and entrepreneurial, I allowed the pursuit of business ambitions to destroy everything I ever held dear.

Unable to process that reality, I turned to a brand new technology: the World Wide Web where I found solace and meaning speaking openly to others.

Initially, as user “On The Beach”, (OTB) that persona acted as a foil and online way for Chris to discuss and face difficult truths his real-world self could not and would not face or acknowledge.

Later though several years before the advent of Facebook, followers, fans or subscribers, under the pseudo name of Beach, I would gain thousands of loyal individual online friends who came to appreciate and look forward to reading my idiosyncratic, often deep and meaningful posts on an array of giant global forums and online watering holes across the world.

I was writing about and debating artificial intelligence and the need to one day develop morals and rights for non living digital life forms as far back as 2002 and also included topics such as “Martian Colony Planning” in the days when Nasa’s JPL lab was Earth’s only hope for putting the first human on the red planet.

Anyway, Beach became the voice I used whenever I was interacting online, a role he has now hosted on my behalf for more than twenty-five years.

As a result, particularly within these pages, Beach Thorncombe’s voice is often louder than Chris’s ever would be.

That said, Beach is not some split personality of mine. Rather he is simply my alter ego, (Like Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust” or Eric Arthur Blair’s “George Orwell” except, unlike either of those Stardust / Orwell fictional nom de plumes, Beach is the raw authentic, fiercely intellectual side of the Chris you may already know or knew.

Enjoy!
