Ironic that an economic development site is in such a predicament.
Reminds me of the occasion I found myself sitting in on a business talk at the premises of a private Dorset company where the proud owner introduced herself with a 5 minute talk enlightening her audience, (us), on the importance of first impressions.
Using her own business as a template to share the wisdom of her commercial success, after her speech, the owner invited comments from her audience.
Hand raised, I was on my feet in seconds.
“You mentioned the importance of first impressions”, I reflected and, after a short pause, added, “And I agree with you”, allowing a slightly longer pause before asking;
“So tell me. WHY are there discarded cigarette butts and weeds nearly a foot tall either side of your entrance doorway?”
The audience, (now my audience), gasped.
The business woman froze.
After the talk, most folk went for coffee at a reception area.
I navigated myself to the company’s kitchen facility and found a dustpan, brush and a pair of scissors.
“First impressions count” is a decent maxim.
“Lead by example” is a better one. 🙂
