The very concept of Dark Energy”, (a term we humans have used merely as a “place holder” for a phenomenon we have yet to understand), isĀ is a thing that had always bothered me as a scientific theory but now a study presented to the Astronomical Society by a New Zealand university presents a better account of why we humans assume some “Great Attractor” is expanding and accelerating the universe down a vast plug hole at the very far edge of a cosmos simply too vast and incomprehensible for our tiny little minds to compute.
But now we have a feasible explanation that suggests we may have got our sums wrong; meaning there may not be an intergalactic plumbing system sucking the entire contents of the universe away after all!
Lumpy Space
We already know that, based on our existing understanding of spacetime, time itself is altered by mass so the university’s observation that space may be lumpy, (certainly lumpier than we have given it credit for), allows us to ponder the idea that the reason we had assumed ‘everything’ was being pulled towards the Great Attractor might just be a result of astrophysicists getting their sums wrong!
