Beachy Head

While pursuing the Gravity venture, I found myself driving across the cliffs close to Beachy head … and the experience was one I shall never forget.

From memory, I remember driving past various cliff side car parks … all perched atop the infamous headland.

I eventually came upon a public house … and parked, (as my memory recalls), inside a clifftop car park opposite that hostelery.

I was in my Lexus LS400, my starship of a limo … with plans in my head to see that every shelf on earth would one day hold some version of my newly patented and manufactured technology.

Point being … I had EVERYTHING to live for.

I stepped out of the cockpit … ventured towards the clifftop … and … felt myself to be in some location of ‘notoriety’.

Obviously I was aware of the reputation Beachy Head held. Obviously I was aware that, for some, it would have been the last view of earth that many disturbed minds would have acknowledged.

I walked further towards the edge.

In my mind I was imagining the thoughts of the landlord of the nearby pub. I asked myself, how many punters has that man or woman talked to … and then I asked myself … How many of those punters later put down their last drink and walked to the place I was now occupying?

I reasoned, “Wow! Being the landlord of the pub opposite Beachy head was some responsibility!”

Then I stepped forward … further towards the edge.

……… And at that point, something happened to me.

It was as if I was some ‘nobody’ offered some snapshot of fame. It was as if ‘this place’ was calling me. It was saying, “Go on … others have done it … why don’t you?”

Beachy Head is THE place to end a life. Hell, it is the MOST famous place in that regard … and … for a second or two … I felt captivated by that notoriety and found myself INSIDE the mind of someone about to step off the edge and … it was as if something was calling me … yet for no reason!

In that moment, in that second … I understood WHY so many suicidal folk chose that spot, that location.

I was lucid, comfortable, successful even … with a happy family waiting at home but … the atmosphere of that place … with it’s own particular brand of reality … almost SEDUCED me into stepping into thin air.

I understand why people jump off Beachy Head.

It is as if it is the accepted and endorsed place to do so!

Beachy Head holds the same mystery as Watkin’s Ley lines. Beachy Head holds the same mystery as Stonehenge. Beachy Head represents an ‘acceptable’ portal to leave this mortal coil behind.

Try it yourself …

Walk up to the edge … and FEEL the vibes.

But if you have any sense, like me, get back in your car and drive … way, way away from that place.

About the Author

27 years ago, at the age of 43, I unwittingly imploded my 20 year love story of a marriage by allowing an extra-ordinary run of local, national and international business success in innovation and design entirely derail my private life.

Meaning, in doing what society expects of us, by striving and succeeding in being brave, risk averse and entrepreneurial, I allowed the pursuit of business ambitions to destroy everything I ever held dear.

Unable to process that reality, I turned to a brand new technology: the World Wide Web where I found solace and meaning speaking openly to others.

Initially, as user “On The Beach”, (OTB) that persona acted as a foil and online way for Chris to discuss and face difficult truths his real-world self could not and would not face or acknowledge.

Later though several years before the advent of Facebook, followers, fans or subscribers, under the pseudo name of Beach, I would gain thousands of loyal individual online friends who came to appreciate and look forward to reading my idiosyncratic, often deep and meaningful posts on an array of giant global forums and online watering holes across the world.

I was writing about and debating artificial intelligence and the need to one day develop morals and rights for non living digital life forms as far back as 2002 and also included topics such as “Martian Colony Planning” in the days when Nasa’s JPL lab was Earth’s only hope for putting the first human on the red planet.

Anyway, Beach became the voice I used whenever I was interacting online, a role he has now hosted on my behalf for more than twenty-five years.

As a result, particularly within these pages, Beach Thorncombe’s voice is often louder than Chris’s ever would be.

That said, Beach is not some split personality of mine. Rather he is simply my alter ego, (Like Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust” or Eric Arthur Blair’s “George Orwell” except, unlike either of those Stardust / Orwell fictional nom de plumes, Beach is the raw authentic, fiercely intellectual side of the Chris you may already know or knew.

Enjoy!
