7 minutes ago (edited)I’m thrilled Suno has throttled an ability for certain users demographics to download and easily promote the obscene AI created slop currently ebbing and flowing along the shores of Spotify, YouTube and the like and truly hope that the brake now being applied to stem the gush of foamy audible effluent currently contaminating the beaches of those platforms will slow to a mere drip.
Generally, according to companies that monitor such use, (Geezer), Sudo has an approximate 70% use by regular punters, hobbyists, etc and a 30% use by professional concerns monetizing the slop they produce via the platforms I’ve already highlighted and elsewhere while other stats highlight that about a third of pro musicians use the app.
And I get it. I tinkered with it myself a couple of years ago although soon appreciated it was way too flat and underwhelming as a creative platform to really impress me. (I mean flat in LLM terms in the way it creates and generates compositions ‘by pattern matching AI commitee’ rather than solely using emotive or human creativity ), although, yes, I can understand why certain companies, agencies, advertisers would use it cynically for a nasty cheap advertising jingle just as I can see how a musician might use it to generate ideas or inspiration.
Seriously though. Just look around at todays musical landscape. Discounting occasional genuine young talent and the current batch of well heeled nepo baby sons and daughters of established artists, we have only extremely aged past artists in our modern Spotify charts. Aged artists the likes of senior YouTuber Rick Beato and his / my generation foolishly worship as deities, (With Beato actually instructing his own YouTube staff and helpers never to even speak or look his guests in the eyes such is their apparent Rock God status) … and then, at the other end of the scale acting like an ominous 21st century digital predator, we have the current embodiment of Suno. (Sigh).
Me? I’ll stick with the likes of Pere Ubu, Suicide, Tim Buckley and Randy California’s Spirit, thanks. Musical entities that, like today’s Angine de Poitrine, take a listener down a path so idiosyncratic and novel that AI will probably never be able to emulate it.
Doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate modern pop by WetLeg, Poppy or similar though. 🙂
