Good cop – bad cop

Hello Chris,

What a load of heartache you (and Sophie’s mum) are enduring.

So I take it from what you write that Sophie lives somewhere local to
you. If so how come you did not know of her whereabouts or get to see
her? Will Jackie take in Chloe too? I couldn’t bear to think of a grand
kid of mine being in care, but at the same time it is so much to take on
for Jackie as she should be enjoying her ‘freedom’ by now.

Drug counsellors are often ex users themselves so that is an issue too
in this new relationship of Sophie’s. Users tend to have mutually
dependant relationships don’t they?

Even before you mentioned this drug supplier could be a potential
murderer I was thinking you ought to be very careful in carrying out
your 007 investigating. Take care.

So in what way are you planning to get your intelligence/information to
the police? Just go in and tell them or pass it on anonymously?
Something to be thought about because of possible repercussions. If you
end up a witness in court it could put you at risk.

Sounds like you do need to de-stress/chill on the weekend. Hope you
enjoy it.

No pics of me out there in the ether hopefully – go out of my way to
make it so, personally and professionally. My daughter put up a pic of
me on her Facebook a while back and I went mad until she took it down.
Make sure I don’t have my pic taken as part of my job and on the odd
occasion when there has been a camera crew around when I have been on
duty I ask them not to film me and stay out the way as much as am able.

Oh, I just remembered an exception, one that I didn’t mind as they
filmed from behind me. I will try and find the link to it at some point;
it may not work anymore though.

My email address is cinsha@hotmail.co.uk if you want to send yours and I
will then send you a decent picture by return. 🙂

Have a good day.

Cindy.

Hi Cindy,

Yes. It has been difficult.

Jackie and I played ‘bad cop – good cop’ as far as the nurturing of our
children were concerned during their upbringing, with J being the
occasional disciplined wrath bringer while I brought the emotional,
philosophical approach to the children’s psyche.

Both Oliver, now 28, and Sophie, 25, proudly say they owe their actual
characters to my influence though I have always reminded them that
without Jackie, I could never have developed into the person they say
they have learned from.

Oliver survived relatively unscathed when Jackie and I broke up in 1999
but Sophie, it now seems, didn’t benefit from having me in her life as
she approached her difficult teens.

Grace, her daughter, was born when she was basically still a child
herself and the responsibility of being a young mother denied her all
the cool, exciting experiences of actually enjoying those heady teenage
years between 16 – 20 that should have been hers to explore.

She remains a very naive, very sweet and trusting girl … though she
has a very powerful and stoical outlook and approach to life … to a
degree that means she hides any kind of negativity or bad things from
me, her father. (Even when Grace was making signs of being born in the
middle of the night, Sophie waited until 8am before disturbing Jackie,
(in the family home), before informing her that baby was truly on her
way).

She has my intellect, a deep and probing mind and a good heart, (nothing
like the zombies and monsters she had as friends a couple of years
back), and she is lithe, very tall with model like looks. (Like her
mother … and me!)

Over the last several months, Sophie had popped in a couple of times and
I was comfy with that because, after the nightmare of those years
earlier ‘no news was good news’ in my books and I just assumed she was
happily getting on with bringing up her new baby with her boyfriend,
particularly after Jackie had phoned to tell me everything was going
well. (Several months earlier).

No. There is no way Jackie should take on any further responsibility
and, as this latest chapter unfolds, I find myself hardening my own
outlook.

My daughter is a grown adult. She must bear the full consequences of her
actions and I find a part of myself saying, “Does Sophie even deserve
the love I hold for her … when she has aborted two children and
abandoned 2 others?” … aside from causing all the heartbreak she has
caused. (Assuming I were to crudely ‘blame’ her and ignore any deeper
reasons for her current situation).

These are the tumbling thoughts a parent has in such a situation …
along with darker, more ominous ones connected with thoughts of
accountability, revenge or some desire to make the pedlars of such
misery somehow pay for their ill deeds.

There has to be some psychological outlet to redress all this and the
dilemma I have is a moral, more than a legal one.

I mean, you can address your own moral views about right or wrong via
your job, presumably delivering you a kind of civil style satisfaction
associated with ‘doing your bit’.

As I stated before, these folk seem to be able to ply their evil trade
without any repercussions. That leads my own inner being to consider
alternative means of redressing the balance via a comic book ‘superhero’
style approach 🙂

That very idea is a compelling one … and a lucrative one for the likes
of Stan Lee, the creator of Spiderman.

Society does hold a fascinating respect for the vigilante in every
culture though I confess and accept that, like Socrates, I must respect
the laws of the state or else undermine them by ignoring said laws.

Anyway … to answer your question … I’m considering contacting my
friend Phil Anderson, (Drug squad), just to see if I can encourage /
inspire the DS to get back onto Robin Brazier, (the potential murderer
described in the Lyme Regis police station files) and Amanda Bartlett,
the woman supplying Dr Robert’s Close, the housing association estate I
mentioned prior.

Anyway. Enough about this now. (I say that gently and respectfully). It
is draining having to write and repeat stuff I’ve already kind of sorted
in my mind. Let’s just say I’m on the case and being a good citizen by
reporting ‘stuff’ that might help resolve some local drug related issues
… or at least put them back under investigation.

Have you not seen my OKC photos? The latest one is the grey heaired
photo of me … with a shingle beach as the background!

About the Author

26 years ago, in my early 40s, I unwittingly imploded my 20 year love story of a marriage by allowing an extra-ordinary run of local, national and international business success in innovation and design entirely derail my private life.

Meaning, in doing what society expects of us, by striving and succeeding in being brave, risk averse and entrepreneurial, I allowed the pursuit of business ambitions to destroy everything I ever held dear.

Unable to process that reality, I turned to a brand new technology: the World Wide Web where I found solace and meaning speaking openly to others.

Initially, as user “On The Beach”, (OTB) that persona acted as a foil and online way for Chris to discuss and face difficult truths his real-world self could not and would not face or acknowledge.

Later though several years before the advent of Facebook, followers, fans or subscribers, under the pseudo name of Beach, I would gain thousands of loyal individual online friends who came to appreciate and look forward to reading my idiosyncratic, often deep and meaningful posts on an array of giant global forums and online watering holes across the world.

I was writing about and debating artificial intelligence and the need to one day develop morals and rights for non living digital life forms as far back as 2002 and also included topics such as “Martian Colony Planning” in the days when Nasa’s JPL lab was Earth’s only hope for putting the first human on the red planet.

Anyway, Beach became the voice I used whenever I was interacting online, a role he has now hosted on my behalf for more than twenty-five years.

As a result, particularly within these pages, Beach Thorncombe’s voice is often louder than Chris’s ever would be.

That said, Beach is not some split personality of mine. Rather he is simply my alter ego, (Like Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust” or Eric Arthur Blair’s “George Orwell” except, unlike either of those Stardust / Orwell fictional nom de plumes, Beach is the raw authentic, fiercely intellectual side of the Chris you may already know or knew.

Enjoy!
